Bulgaria is a great country, emerging after years of communist rule unto the modern world. The infrastructure has improved vastly since joining the EU in 2007. Roads are being built that are up to western standards.
The Bulgarian language is hard to understand and learn as they use the Cyrillic alphabet, and most westerners cannot even read street names. Sinc joining the EU, all major roads are now signposted in English.
Believe it or not, Bulgaria, at the time of writing does not have ANY shopping malls, but that will change later in 2009. A huge new shopping mall is being built by Tishman in Sofia and is due to open in December 2009.
Bansko is a 2 hour transfer from the capital city airport of Sofia. Transport is plentiful, either bus, taxi or car hire. With the availability of GPS in Bulgaria, driving is now easy, as you have no need to understand the Cyrillic alphabet!
Bansko is one of the most modern ski resorts in the world. The Gondola and the Ski lifts are all brand new. All the development is brand new to the south of the old Town Centre, which retains the old world charm and is a great place to visit.
In the summer the mountain air is marvellous, and the highlight of the summer events is the Bansko Jazz Festival spanning 5 days with some of Europe’s and America’s great bands. This is a free festival that attracts many thousands of visitors every August.
